Briana Robertson/ Breann Rambo in “The Horrible Hall of Mirrors”
from “Scream Queens” which opened last Friday at MonOrchid.  I want to thank everyone who came out.  It was great to see so many friendly faces, and hear the freaking Phoenix mayor came by and liked my stuff, and it was also a pleasure to meet a bunch of new people.
I created a soundtrack which was played through a 1950s radio and was popping popcorn and giving it away during the opening.  While there was the appeal of the visuals, the audio and the taste of popcorn, I hadn’t considered the smell of the popcorn adding to the atmosphere.  I did hear people say it smelled like a theater which was great!
The best part is always blending into the shadows of a gallery and watching people react to your work, hearing what they say to one another when they don’t know the artist is the guy in the chair behind them.  Everything I heard was positive and quite a few people immediately said “oh, it’s like a 1950s horror movie, awesome.”  I saw a lot of people laugh at some of the more ridiculous images.
Truthfully, I do most of my work in a vacuum and the effect of an image posted on the web, and seeing how many “likes” you get is a poor measure of how art communicates, how it affects people.  It’s important to me to make art that causes people to feel something- stuff that causes a smile or revulsion or happiness or curiosity or evokes a strong memory.
My goal is to have 5 rotating solo shows of this nature and do each appropriately installation-style.  Those shows will be Scream Queens, Animal Sight, Strung Out, the scanner stuff which I haven’t named, and Dissolved Girl.
